OVERVIEW
Data.census.gov is the new platform to access demographic and economic data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The vision for data.census.gov is to improve the customer experience by making data available from one centralized place so users spend less time searching for data and content, and more time using it.

Project brief

Historically Census Data has maintained a formal, "government" look across its organization's website, with limited user functionality and archaic visuals. As a result, competitors within their industry have lured users in their direction with greater functionality and enhanced aesthetics.

My Contribution

As the Principal Interaction Designer, I led the team in the ideation of designs, while synthesizing feature requirements and managing key stakeholder relationships.

User Research

Due to a lack in funding and availability for user testing, our team was not able to interview, review testing prompts, nor evaluate the limited research being conducted. As such, we were presented with assumptions regarding our user groups and used UX best practices to design the data.census.gov site.

User Assumptions:
-
Users are a mix of experienced and new users.
-
Historically users come to the site for geo-specific information and data without any need to explore or try a new functionality, as it caused them fatigue to learn the system.
Interaction Design
Features were built and sketched out with InVision into high fidelity wireframes with outlined content and a statement of value or explanation of intent for change.
